The Art and Craft of Film Directing

Filmmaking can be a complicated and risky adventure, but Making the Magic Happen shows you why directing a movie is actually simpler than you think. The trick is to properly learn the “craft” of filmmaking first, and then adapt your logistical and creative skills to the “art” of filmmaking.
Making the Magic Happen demystifies every aspect of film directing by demonstrating what you must learn about the CRAFT of directing before pursuing the ART of directing.
To me “Making the Magic Happen” is one the most comprehensive guides on film directing ever written. Taking over 40 years of creative knowledge and know how, it covers every part of the directing process in detail while being written in such a way that anybody and everybody can pick it up and understand every detail. How Peter D, Marshall has created a wonderfully detailed account of how to be the best director you can be in such a concise format, while not losing any of the important details, is a testament to his resolve and character that he has shown over the years of active service in the business we call show business. There is no fluff here people, just a fantastic manuscript. “Making the Magic Happen” is more than a jargon busting, step by step bible and should be one of the first books on any film school’s reading lists - and on any creative person’s bookshelf. Everyone who wants to be a director should read this book at least once - the thing is, you will pick it up time and again for inspiration. You won’t regret it. Seán Martyn
